Questions answered

The things people ask us most. If yours isn't here, pop in and ask — someone behind the counter will know.

What time do you start serving breakfast?
Breakfast is served from 8am Monday to Saturday and from 9am on Sunday. It is cooked to order, so nothing sits under a lamp. We stop serving when the kitchen closes at 3pm.
Do you do a full English breakfast?
Yes. The full English is bacon, sausage, eggs cooked how you want them, grilled tomato, mushrooms, baked beans and toast. There is a vegetarian version with vegetarian sausage. Both are cooked to order from 8am.
How much is breakfast?
The full English is [TO CONFIRM]. A bacon sandwich is [TO CONFIRM] and eggs on toast are [TO CONFIRM]. Prices are on the menu on the wall and on this site, and they do not change at the weekend.
Do you serve afternoon tea, and do I need to book?
We serve cream tea and afternoon tea every day we are open, and no booking is needed. Walk in and sit down. If you are a group of six or more, come a little before or after the lunch rush, because the room is small.
How much is a cream tea?
A cream tea is [TO CONFIRM] and that includes two scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, plus a pot of Yorkshire tea. Hotel afternoon teas within ten minutes' walk start at around sixty pounds and need booking weeks ahead.
How far are you from Covent Garden?
About two minutes' walk. We are at 370 Strand, WC2R 0JF, on the north side of the Strand. Covent Garden Piazza is a short walk up the side streets, and Somerset House is directly opposite.
What is the nearest tube station?
Temple is the closest at roughly three minutes' walk. Covent Garden, Charing Cross, Embankment and Holborn are all between five and ten minutes away. Buses along the Strand stop within a few steps of the door.
Do you take bookings?
No. We are a walk-in café. Tables are given out as they come free, and at busy times the wait is usually a few minutes rather than a queue down the street. Before noon and after 2pm are the quietest stretches.
Do you have vegetarian and vegan options?
Yes. There is a vegetarian breakfast, omelettes, bubble and squeak, avocado and eggs on toast, jacket potatoes and salads. Vegan options are more limited, so ask at the counter and the kitchen will tell you what can be made without dairy or egg.
Can you do gluten free?
Gluten free bread is available on request for sandwiches and toast. The kitchen is small and shared, so we cannot promise no cross contact. Tell the staff about any allergy when you order and they will check each dish with the kitchen.
Are you licensed?
Yes. We serve wine by the glass or bottle, bottled beer and a short list of cocktails, alongside barista coffee and Yorkshire tea in a pot. Drinks are served until we close at 3pm.
Is there outdoor seating?
[TO CONFIRM]
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. Children are welcome and the kitchen will do smaller portions or plain versions of most dishes. The room is compact, so a pushchair is easier to manage outside peak lunchtime, roughly between midday and 2pm.
Is the café accessible?
[TO CONFIRM]
Can I get food to take away?
Yes. Sandwiches, pastries, cakes and hot drinks can all be taken away, and breakfast items can be boxed. There is no online ordering, so order at the counter.
Can you seat a group of eight?
It depends on the time. The room is small, so eight people are much easier to seat before noon or after 2pm than in the middle of the lunch rush. We cannot hold tables in advance.
Do you take card payments?
[TO CONFIRM]
